The monitor's touchscreen interface allows you to adjust settings and access monitoring features such as histogram, waveform, RGB parade, vectorscope, and many more scopes and exposure tools. Video is recorded using industry-standard Apple ProRes (HQ, 422, LT, or Proxy) and Avid DNxHD and DNxHR codecs. You can also use the USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C port to record to an external drive, as well as use it for configuring and upgrading the monitor.

The Video Assist records using a single high-speed UHS-II SD slot to SDHC/XC memory cards. The new Blackmagic Video Assist version 3.3 update is available to download from the Blackmagic website.Add professional monitoring and high-quality recording to virtually any camera with the Video Assist 5" 12G-SDI/HDMI HDR Recording Monitor from Blackmagic Design. The new update also adds audio monitoring channel selection and XLR audio mapping for the Blackmagic Video Assist 7″ 3G.

Update: Blackmagic has gotten back to us and yes, it will still record internally while acting as a USB capture device! Advertisements We’ve reached out to Blackmagic to confirm if this is possible and will update this post if and when we receive a response. If you can, that’s pretty awesome for the Facebook and YouTube live streamers, because you’d be able to record a high-quality BRAW (or 10-Bit ProRes or DNx) version for editing and uploading later without having to waste your computer’s resources to record during the live stream.

The press release does talk about some of the features of the Video Assist monitors – like the 12G’s ability to record BRAW internally – but there’s no mention of whether or not it can record while acting as a webcam. So, you can use this with any camera you can normally hook up to to the Video Assist for either monitoring or recording internally. What’s more, the monitor can act as a webcam regardless of whether your camera’s signal is HDMI or SDI. The new update works with both Video Assist 3G and Video Assist 12G HDR models allowing you to connect them to your Mac or Windows PC and access them just like any other webcam in all your usual software (Zoom, Skype, Facebook Live, YouTube Live, OBS, etc) in up to 1080p resolution.
